Where to buy XLM in Japan: the short answer
If you live in Japan, buy XLM from an exchange registered with the Financial Services Agency. The FSA register lists ステラルーメン at 11 of the 27 registered crypto-asset exchange service providers: bitFlyer, Coincheck, SBI VC Trade, bitbank, GMO Coin, BitTrade, OKJ, Binance Japan, Rakuten Wallet, Mercoin and FINX JCrypto. SBI VC Trade also runs the BITPOINT brand, which it absorbed in April 2026. For the lowest trading costs, look for a yen order book (取引所). bitbank, GMO Coin and bitFlyer Lightning all run one for XLM. If you value simplicity over price, a dealer desk (販売所) like Coincheck’s is the easiest route, but you pay a spread.
This page reviews each option, explains spreads and fees, and shows how to send XLM out safely under Japan’s travel rule. For market data, regulation and tax, start with our Stellar Lumens in Japan guide. Newcomers can also use the general how to buy Stellar Lumens walkthrough.
How we checked which exchanges list XLM
Exchange marketing pages can be out of date, so we started from the regulator. The FSA publishes a register of crypto-asset exchange service providers that lists every coin each firm handles. We used the edition current at our latest check. We then checked live data where we could, using the public APIs of bitbank, GMO Coin, Coincheck and OKJ, and CoinGecko’s ticker list for bitFlyer and BitTrade.
The register also shows who does not list XLM. Sixteen firms don’t, including Zaif, BTCBOX, Gate Japan, OSL Japan, Coinbase KK and Laser Digital Japan, the Nomura group firm registered in August 2026. LINE BITMAX and DMM Bitcoin did not appear on the register at all, so ignore older articles that recommend them for XLM. The industry body JVCEA publishes monthly figures. In September 2026, XLM was the sixth most-traded coin on Japanese exchanges, with ¥7.33bn of spot volume.
販売所 vs 取引所: spreads versus fees
This is the most important cost decision for a Japanese XLM buyer. Note that 取引所 has two meanings: it is the everyday word for any exchange company, and also the name of the order-book service inside one. So a search for ステラルーメン 取引所 can mean either “which exchanges list XLM” or “where is there an XLM order book”. This page answers both. At a 販売所 (dealer desk), the exchange is your counterparty. It shows a buy price and a sell price, and the gap between them, the スプレッド, is its margin. There is often no separate “fee”, but the spread is a real cost. Here is an illustration with round numbers, not real quotes. Suppose a coin’s market price is ¥100, and a dealer quotes ¥102 to buy and ¥98 to sell. If you bought and sold straight away, you would lose about 4% without the price moving at all. Spreads widen when markets move fast.
At a 取引所 (order book), you trade with other users and pay a published fee. GMO Coin’s XLM order book, for example, lists a taker fee of 0.09% and a maker fee of −0.03%, which is a rebate. Take a ¥100,000 order. If it fills immediately against existing orders (taker), the fee is about ¥90. If you post a limit order that someone else fills (maker), you receive about ¥30 back. The catch is that you need to understand limit and market orders, and thin order books can move against large orders.
The practical rule: for small, occasional purchases, a dealer desk’s convenience may be worth it. For anything larger, or regular buying, an order book is usually cheaper. Always compare the buy and sell quotes on screen before you tap.
Order-book exchanges for XLM
bitbank
bitbank has listed XLM since 16 September 2020 and runs an XLM/JPY order book. At our latest check it had the highest yen XLM order-book volume tracked by CoinGecko, about US$80,000 in 24 hours. Its own ticker showed roughly 478,000 XLM traded. For active traders who want depth in yen, it is the natural first stop. SBI Holdings opened talks in May 2026 to make bitbank a consolidated subsidiary, but that was not final when we checked.
GMO Coin
GMO Coin runs an XLM order book with the published taker fee of 0.09% and maker rebate of 0.03%. According to its public API, the minimum order is 1 XLM. It also offers a dealer desk. Its order book traded about 300,000 XLM over 24 hours in our snapshot. It is a strong choice if you like to place limit orders and collect the maker rebate.
bitFlyer
bitFlyer, one of Japan’s largest retail exchanges, added XLM/JPY to its bitFlyer Lightning order book on 1 April 2021. It also sells XLM through its dealer desk. Use Lightning for lower costs and the simple app for convenience. Its XLM/JPY market was trading at our latest check.
OKJ (formerly OKCoin Japan)
OKJ lists an XLM-JPY pair, but at our check the order book was empty and showed no volume over 24 hours. CoinGecko’s last recorded trade was a few days old. Listing is not the same as liquidity, so check activity before relying on this route.
Dealer desks and other registered options
Coincheck
Coincheck is one of Japan’s best-known beginner apps. It sells XLM only through its 販売所; XLM is not among its order-book pairs. That makes buying easy but means you pay the spread every time. It is fine for a first small purchase. For bigger sums, compare its quote with an order book elsewhere.
SBI VC Trade and BITPOINT
SBI VC Trade, part of the SBI financial group, lists ステラルーメン and quotes its prices at dealer (販売所) rates on its site. It offers both 販売所 and 取引所 spot trading in general, so check in the app whether XLM is on its order book. On 1 April 2026 it absorbed BITPOINT Japan, and the BITPOINT brand continues. BITPOINT added XLM in July 2025 across spot trading on BITPOINT and BITPOINT PRO, its 貸して増やす lending service and つみたて recurring purchases.
Binance Japan, Rakuten Wallet, Mercoin, BitTrade and FINX JCrypto
Binance Japan is registered with the FSA, and the register lists XLM among its coins. XLM/JPY trades on Binance’s order book, but we could not confirm how Binance Japan’s yen market is set up, so check in the app. Rakuten Wallet lists XLM on the register among its 14 coins. Its website blocked our checks, so we could not confirm the trading format or whether Rakuten points can be used for XLM. Mercoin, the Mercari group’s crypto service, also lists XLM on the register. It is app-based, but we could not verify its trading format. BitTrade (formerly Huobi Japan) had a trading XLM/JPY market on CoinGecko. FINX JCrypto is a smaller registered firm that also lists XLM.

Funding your account with yen
Japanese exchanges are funded in yen. Standard methods are bank transfer (銀行振込) and instant net-banking deposits (クイック入金), and some firms also take convenience-store payments. Fees and supported banks differ by exchange and change often, and we did not verify each one, so read the deposit page before you send money. Opening an account (口座開設) requires identity verification. Recurring purchases (積立 or つみたて) are a popular way to spread out buying, where an exchange offers them for XLM.
Sending XLM out: memos and the travel rule
Moving XLM off a Japanese exchange is quick on the Stellar network itself, with ledgers closing in about five seconds. The exchange’s own checks are what take time. Two rules matter. First, the memo. When you send to another exchange, copy the memo it gives you exactly, because exchanges credit deposits by memo. Without it your XLM can be delayed or lost. Personal wallets usually don’t need one, but always send a small test first. Our guide to XLM fees and transfer speed explains the mechanics, and our Stellar wallets guide helps you choose a self-custody wallet.
Second, the travel rule. Since 1 June 2023, Japan’s anti-money-laundering law (犯罪収益移転防止法) has required exchanges to pass sender and recipient information to the receiving exchange for crypto transfers. SBI VC Trade explains this in its travel rule notice. The rule covers transfers to designated countries and regions. For other destinations, or for private wallets, exchanges collect information about the recipient and may refuse some transfers. Expect to state the destination exchange or wallet type before withdrawing.
Why unregistered overseas exchanges are risky for Japanese residents
Crypto exchange services for Japanese residents require FSA registration. The FSA publishes a list of unregistered operators it has warned. It includes Bybit Fintech Limited, MEXC Global, Bitget Limited and LBank Exchange, as well as Binance Holdings, warned in 2021. Binance Japan is a separate company that holds its own FSA registration. The overseas list was last updated in September 2026.
Using an unregistered platform means stepping outside Japan’s supervision. Registered firms must follow FSA and JVCEA rules on how they handle customer assets and listings. An unregistered one does not, and you may have little recourse if it freezes withdrawals or leaves the market. There is also a tax angle. The planned 20.315% separate taxation is expected to cover only crypto handled by firms registered under the incoming FIEA regime. Our regulation and safety guide covers the wider rules.
If you live outside Japan, the picture is different. International platforms licensed where you live are the normal route, and our Asia hub links the guides for other countries.
Choosing the best crypto exchange in Japan for XLM
There is no single best exchange, but there are clear fits. For low-cost trading in yen, start with bitbank for depth, or GMO Coin if you want to collect the maker rebate. bitFlyer Lightning is a good alternative if you already use bitFlyer. For simplicity and a first purchase, Coincheck and SBI VC Trade are easy to use, but watch the spread. If you want lending or recurring buys for XLM, BITPOINT, now part of SBI VC Trade, offers both. Whatever you choose, confirm the firm is on the FSA register, copy memos exactly, and move long-term holdings to a wallet you control. For the live yen price, see the XLM price page.
Frequently asked questions
Which Japanese exchanges sell XLM?
The FSA register lists XLM at 11 firms: bitFlyer, Coincheck, SBI VC Trade (which also runs BITPOINT), bitbank, GMO Coin, BitTrade, OKJ, Binance Japan, Rakuten Wallet, Mercoin and FINX JCrypto. LINE BITMAX and DMM Bitcoin were not on that list. Check the register again before signing up, as listings change.
Does Coincheck have XLM on its exchange (取引所)?
No. Coincheck sells XLM only through its dealer desk (販売所), so the price includes a spread. If you want an XLM/JPY order book, bitbank, GMO Coin and bitFlyer Lightning offer one.
What is the difference between 販売所 and 取引所?
At a 販売所 the exchange sells to you directly at a quoted price that includes a spread. At a 取引所 you trade with other users on an order book and pay a published fee, which is usually cheaper. Compare the buy and sell quotes before you buy.
Can I use Binance or Bybit from Japan?
Binance Japan is a separate company registered with the FSA, and the register lists XLM among its coins. The FSA has issued warning letters to several overseas operators, including Bybit, MEXC and Bitget, for serving Japanese residents without registration. Residents should use registered firms.
Do I need a memo when sending XLM from a Japanese exchange?
When sending to another exchange, yes. Copy the memo the receiving platform shows you exactly, or the deposit can be delayed or lost. Our XLM transfer guide explains why memos exist.
