Where to buy XLM in Korea: the short answer
If you live in Korea, you can buy XLM with won on five exchanges: Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Digital X (formerly Korbit) and GOPAX. All five run an XLM/KRW market, all have reported to the Korea Financial Intelligence Unit, and all link to a partner bank that verifies your name. For most buyers, Upbit is the practical first choice because its XLM/KRW order book is by far the deepest. Bithumb is a solid number two. The other three work fine for smaller orders or if you already bank with their partner.
This page reviews each exchange through an XLM lens. We look at liquidity, ownership, quirks worth knowing and how withdrawals work under Korea’s travel rule. For the bigger picture on the won market, regulation and the 2027 tax, start with our Stellar Lumens in Korea guide. If you are new to crypto altogether, the general how to buy Stellar Lumens walkthrough covers the basics.
What every Korean won exchange has in common
Korean law sets a high floor, so the five exchanges look alike in the ways that matter most. Each has reported as a virtual asset service provider (VASP) to KoFIU under the 특금법, which requires ISMS security certification. Each also holds a real-name verified bank account (실명확인 입출금계정) arrangement with a partner bank. That is the gate to won trading, and it is why Korea has five won exchanges rather than fifty. The Virtual Asset User Protection Act, in force since 19 July 2024, adds another layer. Customer won must sit at a bank, most customer coins must be in cold storage with insurance or reserves, and manipulation and insider trading are crimes.
The differences sit elsewhere. They come down to liquidity (how much XLM actually trades), ownership and banking stability, fees and promotions, and the app experience. Korean exchanges also share a warning system through the DAXA alliance. A coin flagged as a 유의종목 on one exchange is often reviewed across all of them. XLM had no such flag on Upbit at our latest check.
Korean won exchanges reviewed
The five reviews below run from the deepest XLM market to the thinnest. Volumes come from a single-day CoinGecko snapshot, which is enough to show the pecking order but not a promise of tomorrow’s liquidity. Where we could not confirm a detail, such as a current bank partner, we say so.
Upbit: the deepest XLM/KRW market
Upbit, operated by Dunamu, is Korea’s largest exchange and the centre of gravity for XLM in won. In our CoinGecko snapshot, Upbit’s XLM/KRW market traded about US$4.05M in 24 hours. That made it the single largest fiat market for XLM worldwide. Upbit’s own data showed about ₩5.4bn traded over the same day. Upbit lists XLM as 스텔라루멘 in three markets: KRW-XLM, BTC-XLM and USDT-XLM. Its market data showed XLM free of any warning or caution flag. When Korean traders search 스텔라루멘 업비트 or 업비트 스텔라루멘, this KRW-XLM market is almost always the price they mean.
A few context points. FSS data put Upbit at roughly 70% of Korean exchange volume in the first half of 2024. More recent estimates vary by source, but Upbit remains the largest. Upbit has historically worked with K Bank for real-name accounts. Confirm the current partner in the app when you sign up. Dunamu and Naver Financial announced a share swap in November 2025, but at our latest check it had not been completed. Fee levels quoted online were not re-verified for this review, so check Upbit’s official fee guide before trading.
Bithumb: the strong number two
Bithumb had the second-largest XLM/KRW market in our snapshot, about US$1.24M in 24 hours. That is enough depth for most retail orders. Its real-name accounts have run through KB Kookmin Bank since 24 March 2025, one of the country’s biggest lenders. In early 2026 Korean media reported that KB shortened its contract with Bithumb to six months, following a large bitcoin mis-payment incident at the exchange and a police probe. We have not verified the details, but it is worth knowing if banking stability matters to you. We could not confirm Bithumb’s current warning status for XLM directly, so check the market page in the app.
Coinone: steady and mid-sized
Coinone carried about US$214,000 of XLM/KRW volume in our snapshot. That is far smaller than Upbit, but fine for everyday purchases. Korean media reported that Coinone cut trading fees to zero as competition heated up with Korbit (now Digital X). Promotions like this come and go, so read the current fee table before assuming a trade is free. Coinone has historically partnered with KakaoBank. We could not confirm the current arrangement, so check during onboarding.
Digital X (formerly Korbit): new name, Mirae Asset owner
Korbit, Korea’s first crypto exchange, now trades as Digital X. Mirae Asset took about 97% of the company. The company was renamed 디지털엑스 on 11 August 2026, and on 16 September 2026 the service name and website moved to Digital X at digitalx.miraeasset.com. Existing accounts and balances carried over. The XLM/KRW market is still live but thin, about US$33,000 in 24 hours in our snapshot. Digital X has offered a trading-fee waiver promotion, so check the current terms. Because the rename changed the domain, Korbit warned customers about phishing sites and scam texts. Bookmark the official address and install the app only from the official stores.
GOPAX: the smallest won market for XLM
GOPAX lists XLM/KRW, but volume was very thin in our snapshot, around US$1,000 a day. In a market that thin, a modest order can move the price, and the spread between bid and ask can be wide. Binance is reported as GOPAX’s majority shareholder, a stake that went through an FIU governance review. GOPAX makes sense mainly for existing customers. If you are choosing an exchange specifically to buy XLM, the depth elsewhere is hard to ignore.
XLM on Korean exchanges at a glance
| Exchange | XLM markets | 24h XLM/KRW volume (snapshot) | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upbit | KRW, BTC, USDT | ≈ US$4.05M | Largest; no XLM warning flag |
| Bithumb | KRW | ≈ US$1.24M | KB Kookmin bank partner |
| Coinone | KRW | ≈ US$0.21M | Fee promotions reported |
| Digital X | KRW | ≈ US$0.03M | Ex-Korbit, Mirae Asset |
| GOPAX | KRW | ≈ US$0.001M | Very thin order book |
Volumes come from CoinGecko’s XLM ticker list at our latest check. They are a one-day snapshot, not an average, so use them to compare depth rather than as current figures.
Opening an account: real names, banks and foreigners
Onboarding follows the same pattern everywhere. You verify your identity in the app, connect a bank account in your own name at the exchange’s partner bank, and only then deposit won. Deposits and withdrawals in won must use that registered account. If you already have an account at Upbit’s or Bithumb’s partner bank, signing up is quicker. Funding is then a normal bank transfer in won, and selling XLM sends won back to the same account. That closed loop is the point of the real-name system: every won that enters or leaves an exchange can be matched to a verified person.
Foreign residents and visitors should expect friction. Korean won exchanges generally require a Korean real-name bank account and accepted ID, and many non-residents cannot meet those requirements. Our research did not cover each exchange’s current rules for foreigners, so check the official onboarding guide before you start. The FIU has also moved to block domestic access to 27 unreported offshore exchanges, including KuCoin and MEXC. Korean residents are expected to stick with reported VASPs.
Withdrawing XLM: memos and the travel rule
Moving XLM out of a Korean exchange is routine, but two rules shape it. The first is the memo. Exchanges credit incoming XLM by the memo attached to the transfer. If you send to another exchange without the exact memo it gives you, the deposit can be delayed or lost. A self-custody wallet usually does not need one. Send a small test before a large transfer. Our XLM transfer and fees guide has the details, and our Stellar wallets guide helps you pick a destination wallet.
The second is the travel rule, in force in Korea since 25 March 2022. When you send virtual assets worth ₩1M or more to another VASP, the exchange must pass on sender and recipient information. For transfers to overseas exchanges, the FSC said they would only go ahead after confirming the sender and receiver are the same person. In practice, expect to register or verify the destination platform before you withdraw. Some destinations may not be supported at all. Proposals to apply the rule to smaller transfers have been reported, so check your exchange’s current policy. Our regulation and safety page covers how XLM is treated in other jurisdictions.
Global options outside Korea
If you are not a Korean resident, a won exchange is usually the wrong tool. A platform licensed where you live is the simpler route. One long-running option is CEX.IO, founded in 2013. It sells XLM by card to verified customers in eligible countries and is registered with the UK FCA under the Money Laundering Regulations. Availability depends on your country, so check before you sign up. Our Asia hub links the guides for other markets.
Choosing the best crypto exchange in Korea for XLM
The “best” Korean exchange for XLM depends on what you value. If you want the tightest prices and the most liquidity, Upbit is the clear pick, with Bithumb as a strong backup. If you already bank with Coinone’s or Digital X’s partner, or a fee promotion is running, those are sensible for smaller orders. GOPAX is hard to recommend for XLM on liquidity alone. Whichever you choose, the same habits protect you. Check the 유의종목 status, compare the won price with the global price for any kimchi premium, copy memos exactly and keep long-term holdings in a wallet you control. For the live won price, see the XLM price page.
Frequently asked questions
Which Korean exchange is best for buying XLM?
For most people it is the one with the deepest XLM/KRW order book, which at our latest check was Upbit by a wide margin, followed by Bithumb. Deeper books mean tighter prices for larger orders. If you already bank with another exchange's partner bank, that can be the more convenient choice.
Does Upbit list XLM?
Yes. Upbit lists XLM as 스텔라루멘 in its KRW, BTC and USDT markets. At our latest check it carried most of the world's won-denominated XLM volume, and XLM had no warning designation.
Can foreigners buy XLM on Korean exchanges?
Won exchanges generally require identity verification and a Korean real-name bank account at the exchange's partner bank, which many non-residents cannot open. Rules and accepted documents vary, so check the exchange's own onboarding guide. Visitors usually find it easier to buy XLM in their home country.
Do I need a memo to withdraw XLM from a Korean exchange?
If you are sending to another exchange, yes. Copy the memo the receiving platform shows you exactly, or the deposit can be delayed or lost. Personal wallets usually do not need one. Our guide to XLM transfers explains why.
What happened to Korbit?
Mirae Asset acquired about 97% of Korbit. The company was renamed 디지털엑스 in August 2026, and on 16 September 2026 the service and website switched to Digital X. Accounts and balances carried over, and XLM/KRW still trades there.
